  Herr, Luckenbaugh...
  PSAC State Mat Champions
    ▪ Tom Herr and
Bill Luckenbaugh are one step closer to national wrestling championships.
Both York grappling products leaped into the spotlight Saturday with victories in the
Pennsylvania Conference Championships at Slippery Rock State College.  Herr, defending NAIA
national titlist, copped the heavyweight crown for Edinboro with an 8-4 victory in the finals
over Clarion's Chuck Coryea while East Stroudsburg's Luckenbaugh nipped Slippery Rock's
Mike Waller, 5-4, for 150-pound laurels.  Herr, a York Suburban product picked a good time
to score his first career victory over Coryea after suffering four straight setbacks at the
hands of the Clarion ace.  Herr, who won all five matches in the two-day championships,
finished the season with a 26-3 mark and will defend his national title at River Falls, Wisconsin
March 7, 8, and 9.  Luckenbaugh, a former West York standout, scored a pair of pins in
earlier matches enroute to the victory in the finals.  He also went unbeaten through the
tourney and finished the state campaign with a perfect 18-0 slate.  Luckenbaugh now
advances to the NCAA Division II championships at California State-Fullerton March 1 and 2.
    ▪ Three other West Yorkers participated in the meet for East Stroudsburg with 190-pounder

Don Lehman taking third in his weight class, while Keith Lichty (126) and Mike Stambaugh
failed to place.  Lehman soundly defeated Tom Schweinburg of Indiana (Pa.) 12-2, in the
consolation finals.  Lichty won two of his four matches but did not place and Stambaugh
lost both of his matches.  East Stroudsburg finished fourth in the team standings, with
Clarion State placing first, followed by Slippery Rock and Bloomsburg.  Wade Schalles of
Clarion, who won the event's outstanding wrestler award, pinned Floyd Hitchcock of
Bloomsburg in 4:28 in the 177-pound class.  Schalles is a two-time national champion and
Hitchcock was a sliver medalist for the United States in last summer's World University
Games in Moscow.  Both were undefeated during the regular season.  Three wrestlers
finished the tournament with unblemished season records.  Clarions' Schalles is 38-0-1,
Jack Spates of Slippery Rock is 29-0 and Bill Luckenbaugh of East Stroudsburg is 18-0.

  Luckenbaugh, Stetler Win PC Titles
  by John Aigeldinger
  1974 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
  College Wrestling Championships
    ▪ March 1, 1974 -
Bill Luckenbaugh and Bob Stetler, two of the Warriors best grapplers joined the ranks of
some of the greatest college wrestlers in the history of the sport by becoming Pennsylvania Conference
wrestling champs last Saturday night.  Luckenbaugh is a former PIAA champion and a West York (PA) grad.
"Lucky" took the 150 pound title in the 31st annual conference championship with a 5-4 victory over Mike
Waller of Slippery Rock.  Stetler, a junior, was the 158 pound winner beating Angelo Natoli of Slippery
Rock, 2-0.  Both wrestlers were sporting 15-0 regular season records going into the PSAC finals.
The Warriors had two other place winners in
Don Lehman, third at 190 pounds and Phil Conlin, fourth at
142lbs.  Both are freshman. Lehman is a West York (PA) graduate and Conlin graduated from Warwick (PA).
ESSC placed fourth among the 13 conference schools, a vast improvement over last year's twelfth place
showing.  Luckenbaugh won his first PC title after being frustrated in two previous attempts.  He was
second to national champion Stan Dziedzic of Slippery Rock in 1971 and he was injured and forced to
default last year.  However Lucky was not to be denied his title this year as he pinned Bill Davis of
Clarion in 1:42 of the semi-finals and came back in the finals, building up close to three minutes of
riding time for the difference in his win over Waller.  Stetler edged Don Eichenlaub in the semi's, the 150

pound champion in 1973, 5-3, on a takedown with 30 seconds remaining.  He controlled his final round
match much more than the score indicated.  He rode Natoli the entire second period and escaped early
in the third and forced the action the rest of the way. Stetler is a former East Stroudsburg Open winner.

THE COACH JT/MJ TOGGAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

     11/8/17

 Dear Don,

Just a belated update on this year's 21st Annual Bulldog Open held at Cool Creek on July 14th, 2017.

This year's event saw 50 determined golfers and volunteers brave the rain and lightning!
Along with a dozen other sponsors and donors, together... they raised a total of $1,606.97.

Those proceeds* were divided as follows:

*$400.00 to Don Lehman for www.westyorkwrestlingalumni.com.

*$606.97 to the West York Wrestling Booster Club.

And, with the recent passing of Mary Jane Toggas...the decision was made to establish a scholarship
through the West York Education Foundation, in memory of our beloved late coach JT and his wife.
This will be the... Coach John T. & Mary Jane Toggas Memorial Scholarship.

The final *$600.00 from this year's Bulldog Open will go to that
for the inaugural year (above) of the
scholarship, which will be given at the Awards Assembly in the spring of 2018.  It will go to a graduating
West York senior (in good academic standing)... who wrestled at least 1 year (including senior year)
and who is going on to a 4 year college or university, a 2-year school, a trade or technical school... or
who is entering any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard
 or National Guard).

Thanks to ALL of you who participated in, donated to or volunteered at this year's event and we hope
to see even more of you out next summer at Briarwood GC for the 22nd Bulldog Open in 2018!

Best wishes to you all and your families for a blessed Thanksgiving and a Christmas filled with
 HIS spirit!
